Program Description
The Hybridization Research Component is implemented by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD). It is funded from 5% of the total 20% Trust Fund allocation for the Coconut Hybridization Program (CHP) under RA No. 11524.
R&D enables the identification and development of high-yielding varieties, improvement of farm management practices, and creation of high-value coconut products — ultimately leading to higher yields, better-quality coconuts, and increased income for coconut farming communities. The Philippines, despite being the 2nd largest coconut-producing country (next to Indonesia), averages only 44 nuts/tree/year due to aging trees and low-yielding varieties.
FUNDING SCOPE: Funds are allocated for R&D programs and projects on coconut hybridization, hybrid coconut seed farms and nurseries, and related activities such as technical capacity building, supplies, equipment, and construction of infrastructure as agreed upon with PCA.
OBJECTIVES:
Improve the production of hybrid coconut planting materials
Improve the quality of planting materials and develop new hybrids
Enhance the productivity of established regional hybrid demo farms
